Shark Week Inspired Jewelry Designs That Are Nothing To Be Afraid of!

Although the official Shark Week 2014 has ended, for shark enthusiasts the frenzy (pun intended!) continues long after. I'll be the first to admit I'm completely fascinated with sharks. Scared as heck by them, but totally fascinated. Which is a good (and very logical reason) why I won't swim any where I can't see the bottom! LOL

It shouldn't be too far-fetched then to see where the inspiration came from for a few of my beaded jewelry creations. Inspired by the crystal blue ocean water, the deep sea and what lies beneath. What Lingers...Beneath The Surface

Each time I had vacationed on Sanibel Island, it was usually for a week at a time. But, I saw very little of the island because I spent every waking hour at the beach. I really didn't care much to see what else Sanibel offered. Except I did go to Captiva Island for dinner. Great restaurant down there. Oh, and I did do a little shopping. A girl has gotta shop! Here was my daily schedule:

-Wake up (with the sandpipers)
  -Go to beach
-Eat lunch
  -Go back to beach
-Eat dinner
  -Go back to beach, stay until (past) sunset
-Sleep, then repeat

Funny story. The first year we vacationed on Sanibel Island, it was with two other people. We unloaded our bags and went straight to the beach. Walking about knee-deep or so in the surf, four across, with me closest to the 'deep' end of the ocean. Something small and fluttery swam between mine and my husbands' feet, startling us (we later discovered it was a wee-bitty little stingray). So, what does he do? He saves himself. Yes. You read that correctly. He pushes me toward the ocean while he jumps toward the beach...nice. And yet, I still married him. :-)

One on evening, we went to go watch the sunset. There was a family at the beach and two of their kids were in the water. Daylight had been fading away and as I watched them, I commented out loud, I hoped they (the parents) are watching those kids (because of course, I was thinking about 'what you can't see beneath, and I saw the father with a cocktail in his hands). No sooner had I thought this but this fin pops out of the water, I start toward the parents but luckily dad was paying attention and ran into the water shouting for them to get out. The kids got out safely.

The ocean is what I like to term a "beautiful nightmare". Its' sparkling blue waters and sandy floors will lure you in, but, believe for one moment the ocean is your friend and you could find yourself struggling in its' powerful waves and currents.

Or, you just might end up as shark bait..hoo, ha-ha (sorry, had to throw that in there!), if you're not careful. Personally, I am not a fan of not being able to see what's below me in the water. Maybe I watched too many Jaws movies.

Sanibel Island. The beach. The unknowns of daily life. These were the inspirations behind two newest handmade beaded necklace designs, affectionately termed Sink or Swim. Studio Friday: New Beaded Jewelry

What a week it's been. Whew, am I ever glad it's over. For the last month and a half to two months, I have been fiddling with Facebook to get a dedicated URL for the Crystal Allure business page. And this week, I was determined to figure it out -what a fiasco that was! Geeze. But, you know what? Every where I turned with questions on the internet or to friends...it was the same thing -Facebook, well, sucks. No better way to put it. There is absolutely no help along the way, the instructions are pretty much none existant and on some features, once you change it -you can never go back.

Needless to say, in the end, I had to create yet another "personal" account to be able to change the business page URL and even that didn't come out exactly as I had planned. BUT, it's done and now the shiny spankin' new Facebook URL is (drum roll, please...): www.facebook.com/CrystalAllure. Now it's even easier to stay connected and informed. The best part is that from time to time, I will be offering only Facebook fans particular specials and offers. So become a fan today and don't miss out.

I've been so focused on this Facebook thing (which by the way, will be a separate post that just might help someone else someday) I can't even remember what I was doing before all this. *sigh*.........(I'm thinking......)......Oh wait, moment of clarity. I had tweaked and updated the Crystal Allure website, improved some photos and added almost a whole new page of beaded jewelry! Ah yes, the real reason for my artistic endeavor -to create beutiful beaded jewelry that I can share with the world!

A while back I came across some lampwork beads that I simply had to have. Although the range of materials that I use in my designs did not include lampwork, it would have been a shame to not get them! Custom Rose Garden Necklace

A lovely lady, visiting Rochester from Tennessee, had visited my booth at the 2007 Chil-E Festival and purchased the Rose Garden bracelet and earrings. I included my business card with her purchase and the next day she called me to request a coordinating necklace. I was very happy to create this custom piece for her and immediately had a design in mind.

I very much appreciated her calling so soon after the show because she was only in Rochester until August 6th. So I quickly set off to the local bead store to be sure I could still obtain the special Rose Lampwork bead used in this design. Luck was on my side and soon I was in my studio working on the design.

The Rose Garden bracelet had been strung and the earrings were wire-wrapped to the french ear wires. But for the necklace I really wanted to give it an added elegance using a wire-wrapping technique for the entire necklace. I kept with the overall theme sequence of the bracelet but just jazzed it up a bit with some small bead sequence changes. I made sure to make it adjustable up to 18-1/2″ for the best fit and I had completed the design within a few nights.

My customer was so very happy I was able to get a necklace made and was very appreciative. As well, I was thankful she allowed me to create a custom design for her to treasure well into the future. I hope she had a wonderful time in Rochester and has a safe trip back home.
