Burgundy Crystal Cystic Hygroma Awareness Bracelet and Ribbon Earrings

It was nearly 4 years ago when I was first introduced to the cause of Hygroma Awareness by Elizabeth. She had requested a Custom Mothers Bracelet with Hygroma Awareness for a dear friend who had lost her child to this disease.

Just a little background on what exactly is cystic hygroma:
Cystic hygromas are birth defects that result in fluid-filled sacs caused by blockages in the lymphatic system (abnormal tissue). They are most often found on babies because these abnormal growths form while the baby is still in the womb. However, a hygroma can still appear after birth and are typically found on a baby’s neck or head.

In general, hygromas get larger, or grow, with your child over time. There is a good prognosis if surgery can totally remove the abnormal tissue. However, in cases where the hygroma doesn't resolve on its own (by 20 weeks into the pregnancy) or complete removal, through surgery, is not possible, the cystic hygroma commonly returns and can cause serious complications.

To be diagnosed with cancer is devastating news. Your mind and body run through a range of feelings and emotions; your thoughts turn to your family and friends; you wonder how you will manage this unwanted path in your life and then....your thoughts turn to fighting this cancer. Your mantra becomes, 'I will not let this Cancer beat me!' Throughout your treatment your support team is also dealing with your diagnosis. It may not be the same feelings you are dealing with, but they are also going through this with you.

National Cancer Survivors Day is June 7, 2015

Earlier this year, I learned a dear friend's mother had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Your pancreas, shaped somewhat like a pear, lies horizontally behind the lower part of your stomach. It is responsible for secreting enzymes that aid in digestion, as well as, hormones to help regulate the metabolism of sugars.

When I met my friend this past weekend, I learned her mother is in the stage of managing her pain; both my friend and her sister have now become caregivers. I could see this has been a difficult time for her and my heart went out to her. It is not easy to be a caregiver and sometimes we forget, or are not aware of, just how much of themselves they give and give up to be a caregiver.

Both hearing from my friend and from the research I did for this blog article, pancreatic cancer often has a poor prognosis. One of the main reasons is because symptoms may not appear until it is already quite advance, which is why it is seldom detected in its early stages. Compounding this issue is the fact that pancreatic cancer also spreads rapidly.

I am sharing this information with you about pancreatic cancer in honor of my dear friend and her mother. It is my hope you will help spread the word about PC and urge your friends and family to learn more about it. Although I'm aware of the prognosis for my friends' mother, as a cancer caregiver, both the affected and their support team are survivors.

Cystic Fibrosis Ribbons Awareness Bracelet and CF Keychain

Having grown up around cystic fibrosis, I learned a great deal about day-to-day struggles those with cystic fibrosis face. Back then, researchers were just beginning to learn about cystic fibrosis, developing therapies and improving treatments. In fact, the cystic fibrosis gene wasn't discovered until 1989. My brother was born with cystic fibrosis in 1965 and he wasn't diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) for years after birth, simply because not much was known too well known about the disease at that time. Even worse, health insurance almost never covered cystic fibrosis treatments or therapies.

But, a lot has changed, evolved and improved with cystic fibrosis since then and I attribute some of that change to awareness. The more informed and aware we are of the disease(s) that affect our lives, whether directly or indirectly, the greater the exponential benefit will be.

The month of May is designated as Sixty Five Roses, Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. With the color purple being nationally recognized as the Cystic Fibrosis Awareness ribbon color. We may be approaching the first day of Autumn (officially September 23, 2014), but just because fall is here does not mean we should stop thinking about sun protection.

Live to Give Organ Donation Bracelet (B207) for National Donate Life Month

It's been five months since the last blog post?! That's crazy! Although, the reality is, life has been a bit crazy the last year and it's been work to try to nail down a revised life and business schedule that accomplishes well...it all. (super-woman still exists, right?) But, behind the scenes, the sparkling work of jewelry design continues!

The events of the past year have given way to much more thought about my late brother and how life would have been had he made it to lung transplant. They are fleeting thoughts, at best, since you cannot change what is -but none the less, I do allow myself to wonder sometimes.

Just the other day I read a news story about a New York woman who donated her kidney to help her boss move up the kidney transplant waiting list. Only to be devastated later by being let go from her job. The choice to become an organ donor is (1) not easy and (2) not to be taken lightly. Purple is the awareness support color for cystic fibrosis (CF), which is often referred to as 'sixty five roses' by young children.

A sterling silver paw charm was added to this bracelet because it is my understanding that those living with Behcet's, who have pets, are comforted by their pet on their bad days. Light blue is the nationally recognized ribbon color for behcet's disease awareness and support.

You may recall Behcet's disease is an autoimmune disease that results from damage to blood vessels throughout the body, particularly veins. Most symptoms of the disease are caused by vasculitis (an inflammation of the blood vessels). Behcet's disease is not contagious; it is not spread from one person to another and it affects each person differently.

So why did I use that same fancy sterling silver Bali bead in each design? And why are they call "Breathe Free.."?

Well, with each of these diseases/illnesses the affected person is either fighting to breathe easy each day and/or battling pain, discomfort and sadness. It is my wish that each of these one of a kind bracelets will give HOPE to each of their wearers.

Call me unaware but I was completely surprised to learn PAP smears do not detect ovarian cancer. Then what the heck do I do them for? I know. Precaution. But still, my whole focus of doing them was because I had thought (up to today) that they detected ovarian cancer, if it existed.

Ovarian cancer has long been called “The Silent Killer”, because it usually isn’t discovered until its advanced stages. However, early-stage ovarian cancer does produce the following symptoms:

-Abdominal bloating, pressure or discomfort
